Common questions

How accurate is an identification?

It is an informed estimate made from a photograph, not a laboratory result. The app shows a confidence score, names the lookalikes it cannot rule out, and says which properties a camera cannot measure — hardness, density and streak among them. Have anything valuable confirmed by a qualified gemmologist.

How do I get a better result?

Fill the frame with the specimen, use daylight or a bright indirect lamp, avoid flash glare on shiny faces, and photograph a freshly broken or cleaned surface where you can. Adding a second photograph from another angle, and answering the follow-up questions, measurably narrows a difficult specimen.

Identification will not start

Identification needs an internet connection; your collection, history and the stone guide all work offline. If you are online and it still refuses, close the app fully and reopen it. There is a daily limit on identifications that protects the service from abuse; if you reach it, it resets the next day.

Where are my photographs and notes kept?

In the app's private storage on your own device. There is no account and nothing is synchronised to us. A photograph is sent for analysis only when you ask for an identification, and it is not kept afterwards. See the privacy policy.

How do I delete my data?

Profile → Clear scan history removes your scans and their photographs. Profile → Clear saved stones removes bookmarks. Collection entries are deleted individually. Uninstalling the app removes everything it stored.

Why does the app ask for the camera or photo library?

Only to photograph or choose the specimen you want identified. Saving to your photo library is asked for only when you choose Save Image. The magnet test uses the phone's magnetometer, the sensor a compass uses, and reads nothing else.
